Select Comfort is known for its innovatively designed Sleep Number beds. But recently, complaints and new information have been surfacing. Maybe it’s not comfortable. Maybe the former versions can collect mold. Lately, there has been nothing good to say about the overly boasted Sleep Number beds.
Who is Select Comfort?
Select Comfort is a moderately large company, with just over 2,000 employees, that design the Sleep Number beds for retail sales. There are a variety of models of mattresses, eight as of 2010, that the company designed and sold. The company is heavily advertised as well as sponsored by numerous hotels, including the Radisson hotels located across the Midwest. They are based out of Minnesota, but the Select Comfort brand is sold to hundreds of distribution companies across the United States, including on-line purchases for bargain hunters.
What is a Sleep Number Bed?
It is often called a Sleep Number bed, even on the Select Comfort website. In modern, or pop culture, terms, it is known as “The Sleep Number”, or a “Sleep Number.” I don’t remember how many conversations I have had with people that we’ve discussed a Sleep Number. But my first reaction is, “You have a Sleep Number? I’m not patient enough for that!” Basically, you have to find your perfect “number.” But mine changes all the time, so with something like this, I would never sleep. Other people, however, base their entire sleep patterns on this and it’s perfect for them. For me? Memory foam is better.
Is the Sleep Number Bed Comfortable?
The comfort of a Sleep Number bed depends on many things, the most being personal preference. If you can’t adapt to a bed that is completely the same all the time, then a Sleep Number bed is not good for you. In that case, you would want a memory foam bed. That is my preference. But my husband, on the other hand, would prefer a Sleep Number Bed. He can guarantee comfort night and night again. The Sleep Number bed allows each person (or, one person) to find a “perfect” number that accommodates his sleeping patterns. Many of the commercials advertising Sleep Number beds also gives the impression that it provides marital harmony, where each partner makes bedtime a secure haven of comfort and peace.
Recent Sleep Number and Complaints?
A quick Google search will show many complaints about the Sleep Number bed. So many people buy a Sleep Comfort bed simply based on other people’s opinions. Reviews of the Sleep Number bed on the Epinions website give a bleak outlook for Select Comfort mattress buyers. With nearly 300 reviews, it only has a star rating of two and a half out of five, total. The major complaint of a Sleep Number bed purchaser is the comfort. I have slept on a Sleep Comfort mattress and know that I do not like it at all! But I wonder how many of these consumers even laid on a Sleep Comfort, let alone slept on one. Sleep Numbers are not for everyone!
Mold in Sleep Number Beds?
Recently, insurance companies in Indiana have been contacted regarding claims that some models created before 2005 could be susceptible to mold due to a faulty air chamber in the mattress. No recall has ever been issued. Breathing issues drove this family to seek an answer to their health issues, including oxygen problems and irritation in the eyes. According to the Progressive Claim Prevention site, this can affect any Sleep Number models from 2002 to 2005.
Black Mold, Breathing Problems or Complaints About a Sleep Number Bed?
Any serious complaints about a Sleep Number bed should be directed toward the company, not the retailer. Any time a phone call or email is made, prepare documentation. This could prove very important if an issue is serious enough to warrant outside counsel. The company’s website offers a direct phone number and the president’s name: Bill McLaughlin. If any health issues arise, contact a physician immediately.
