Flowers are an essential part of the Japanese culture and make up a unique way to decorate the local Zen gardens and parks of the native country. Sometimes they are used for decoration, and are often seen as part of the modern clothing that the Japanese wear, including on the kimono. Common Japanese flowers can also be found in the United States, and include the well-known cherry blossoms, poppies and lilium rubellum.
Japanese Cherry Blossoms
Considered to be one of the best known Japanese flowers, the cherry blossom blooms in the beginning of spring on a Sakura cherry tree. They have a unique look: mostly white and a little pink. Many cherry blossoms are found near the Tidal Basin in Washington D.C., where the National Cherry Blossom Festival is located. The cherry blossom trees were presented as a gift from Japan in 1912. The cherry blossom offers a symbolic meaning to the Japanese and depicts morality.
Japanese (Opium) Poppy Information
Poppies are considered to be a common Japanese flower and exist all across North America. There are a variety of poppy types, including the Stylophorum and the Arctomecon. The poppy is popular as a tool of decoration, and the opium poppy plant is famous for its ability to heal pain and ailments. Poppies are commonly red in color, although other variations exist, and symbolize both sleep and death. Much of this symbolism comes from the opium poppy plants.
Lilium Rubellum Flower: A Fragrant Flower
According to the Pacific Bulb Society, the lilium comes from the family Liliaceae. This traditional flower first hailed in Japan from the Island of Honshu. It can be anywhere from 18 inches to 30 inches tall. The flower grows from bulbs. The lilium is a deciduous species and replenishes itself naturally. Most of these popular flowers have a high fragrance level and come in a variety of colors. They are highly adaptive to their environment, and grow well in both warm and cool climates. The lilium rubellum attaches to the stem in a downward sweep and boasts six pointed petals.
Decorating With Japanese Flowers
When decorating a home or garden, many people prefer to go with a specific theme. Using a combination of the above flowers in a garden or home can add to the air of tranquility and overall decorum. Many variations of poppies and lilium rubellums can add to the overall look and encourage variety.
