What are the advantages of using American Psychological Association (APA) writing style for paper and essay formatting?

APA Style, also known as American Psychological Association style, is one of many formats that can be used for papers and major documents. Other major formats include Modern Language Association (MLA), American Psychological Association (APA), Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts (URM) and Chicago Style. The APA writing style has a variety of advantages that make it preferable amongst numerous academic professors.

Many students use the APA format because they are required to from their teachers, but do not completely understand the overall advantage of using it. Some advantages include a consistent format, simplification for the editor and the ability to establish credibility.

Consistent Format

According to the English Department at Purdue University, the use of the APA format is most often used in the social sciences to cite sources. Using the APA Style allows an established way to use a consistent format that can is easily recognized and supersedes basic formatting. The APA format includes a variety of regulations, including its basic components, the title page, abstract, body and reference page. The format encourages the use of in-text citations rather than footnotes and endnotes. General guidelines change periodically and are updated on a consistent basis, however general formatting rules include the size and style font required as well as margin sizes and spacing. Running heads are required on all pages of the document.

By provided the proper documentation as outlined by the APA rules, a writer can prove that they are capable of following select requirements as set forth in his field.
